About this module
The Pro Start Anaesthetics course is designed to give the Rural Generalist (RG) registrar an opportunity to experience anaesthesia in a rural hospital environment. This environment brings its own challenges, but equally has many benefits.
This course provides a workplace-based introduction to RG anaesthetics, and serves as a primer to the one-year Diploma of Rural Generalist Anaesthesia training program run under the governance of the Tripartite Committee of Rural Generalist Anaesthesia (TC-RGA) and ANZCA Council.
The Pro Start Anaesthetics program is recognised by the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) as one of the many options for meeting Core Generalist Training (CGT) Anaesthetic experience requirements.
It is not the intention or capability of this course to produce fully qualified RG Anaesthetists but rather to establish some important background knowledge and practical skills which can also be applied to other areas of practice, such as Obstetric and Emergency Medicine.
Please note: In addition to completing this module, you are also required to complete a number of activities with your identified supervisor and 15 x 3.5 hr theatre sessions. This course will take approximately 6-12 months to complete.
Learning outcomes
At the completion of this module, you will
1. Assess and prepare patients safely for anaesthesia.
2. Explain the principles of anaesthetic delivery, monitoring, and physiology.
3. Apply pharmacological principles to peri‑operative anaesthetic care.
4. Manage airways and respond to common anaesthetic complications and crises.
5. Recognise special considerations in anaesthetic practice.
Audience
This module is designed for ACRRM GP registrars undertaking a foundational introduction to anaesthetics, to be completed alongside supervision from a Rural Generalist Anaesthetist (RGA).
