About this module
This module aims to provide healthcare practitioners with background information on the care of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients in the primary care setting.
This module introduces key aspects of First Nations health, including the Closing the Gap strategy, concepts of health and wellbeing, and the influence of cultural factors.
You will explore specific government initiatives aimed at improving health outcomes, followed by an overview of preventative health activities that you may encounter in clinical practice.
The module concludes with a summary of common health conditions affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Regardless of your practice setting, it is essential to understand this information. While some Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples may choose to access care through an Aboriginal Health Service, others may prefer mainstream primary care services.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples should be aware that this module and the associated readings may contain images, voices or names of people who may have passed away.
This course will take approximately 2 hours to complete.
Learning outcomes
After completion of this course, you will be able to:
1. Describe the National Closing the Gap Strategy and its relevance to General Practice.
2. Identify key cultural factors that influence health care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and apply strategies to create a more welcoming and culturally safe general practice environment.
3. Explain the importance of accurate and respectful identification of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in health care settings.
4. Recognise when Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples Health Assessments (MBS Item 715) are appropriate and understand their role in preventive care.
5. Outline other relevant Medicare and Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme initiatives available to support the health care of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
6. Describe health conditions that disproportionately affect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
