About this module

A comprehensive online course to educate and empower healthcare providers to deliver end-of-life care in the home setting, with a special emphasis on serving regional and remote communities.
Welcome to Palliative Medication Proficiency: Mastering Syringe Drivers and Opioid Administration in Home Settings.
Throughout these modules you will receive comprehensive education and practical insights to enable you to offer end-of-life care with confidence to palliative patients in their own home setting, which also includes residential aged care facilities. Case studies presenting common clinical scenarios and challenges that can arise when providing end-of-life care in a patient’s home environment are also included.
This course will take approximately 2 hours to complete.

Learning outcomes

After completion of this course, you will be able to:
1. Plan, prepare and organise for end-of-life care in the home setting.
2. Provide culturally appropriate care during the end-of-life process.
3. Recognise signs that indicate when a patient is approaching the terminal phase of life.
4. Understand the core subcutaneous medications you need to be confident in using when providing end-of-life care for patients at home, including how to prescribe safely and calculate dosages.
5. Understand how to use syringe drivers.
6. Understand the steps to take after death occurs at home and how to equip yourself to offer support and care for grieving individuals.

Audience

This module is designed for GPs, GP registrars, nurses, rural and remote clinicians and other healthcare professionals involved in providing end‑of‑life care in community, home, and residential aged care settings, particularly those supporting patients in regional and remote areas.
