About this module
Welcome to Understanding LGBTIQ+, a course developed by SHINE SA in partnership with gpex.
Note: In this course we have generally used the acronym “LGBTIQ+”. We recognise that other variations of this acronym exist. When referencing a resource prepared by another body, we typically have used the acronym they have used, especially when it is included in the title of their work.
LGBTIQ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer or questioning. However we acknowledge that even this acronym has many variations and does not cover all sexually and gender diverse people. Dr Milton Diamond stated ‘Nature loves diversity, society hates it’. Society tries to create boxes and labels which people can conveniently fit into. But people are so much more diverse than boxes and labels.
Many of those who work within the health profession have the desire to practise inclusively, to use the right terminology and to be accepting of sexual and gender diversity – but don’t feel they have the knowledge, skills or confidence to do this.
This course provides an overview of the key concepts for people working with LGBTIQ+ individuals.
However, it is also important to acknowledge that there is no set authority for LGBTIQ+ people. Issues and new acronyms and terms evolve and emerge within the community; and respect and understanding of the LGBTIQ community involves continuous learning and embracing of this further diversity.
Learning outcomes
At the completion of this module, you will:
1. Describe the differences in sex, gender and sexual orientation and how culture shapes perceptions of gender and sexual orientation.
2. Describe the different presentations of sexual orientation and sex and gender.
3. Demonstrate an increased awareness of the health impacts of discrimination and violence on LGBTIQ+ communities.
4. Understand the impacts of the attitudes of health workers on the health outcomes for LGBTIQ+ communities.
5. Adopt a safe and inclusive medical practice/practitioner approach for LGBTIQ+ people.
Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
This module is CPD approved for RACGP CPD hours for 2026-2028 triennium. This course is accredited with the Royal College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM).
